NEW YORK (AP) -- Phoenix right wing Mike Gartner won the NHL player of the week Monday after becoming the fifth player in league history to score 700 goals.
Gartner scored three goals and had one assist in the period from Dec. 8-14, including his 700th and 701st goals on Sunday night against Detroit.
Gartner, who has five goals and five assists on the season, trails Wayne Gretzky (871), Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731) and Phil Esposito (717) on the NHL career goals list.
Calgary goalie Rick Tabaracci and Pittsburgh goalie Tom Barrasso were also considered for the award.
